The University of the Third Age - Welwyn Hatfield

Board Games study group

Group Leader: Graham Baker - 07890 000240
Meetings are held in Welwyn Garden City on Mondays, from 1:30 to 5

Trish and I play board games most days since we both retired and would like to extend an invitation to members to enjoy a fun hobby.
You may have bad memories of playing Monopoly as a child with a sibling or grown up because they just wanted to win. Our mantra when playing games is “The object of the game is to win, but the reason to play is have fun.” Nobody likes to lose but most of us dislike a bad loser more. The games we play are mostly published this century and have a wide variety of themes and mechanics. Some use dice while more use cards as random factors. Many are what are called ‘Worker Placement Games’ where each player makes decisions every turn that differ from the other players. There are games that involve watching birds feed in the garden, building a zoo, terraforming Mars, building railways, racing cars and bicycles, serving customers in a German tavern, trying to have the most influence in the medieval city of Orleans, hunting for lost ruins like Indiana Jones, building a stone age village as well as helping the rats build a rocket ship to the moon which they believe is made of cheese.
Whether you like serious exploration and mathematical calculations or a bit of frivolity we have games to suit your taste. The best thing about the hobby is socialising while keeping the grey cells active.
We meet in our house in Welwyn Garden City (for the time being) each Monday from 1.30 pm till about 5.00. Please contact Graham on 07890000240 if you are interested.
