The University of Hertfordshire philosophy department run a philosophy society, with a programme of weekly talks aimed at all levels from beginners up.  These are free to the public and take place on Thursdays at 5pm. The last one of the current term has ended, but the talks will start again in the spring.(Feb 5).  The programme is here:

What can we do to increase our chances of having healthy, busy brains into old age? What is the evidence for the 'use it or lose it' hypothesis?

Senior citizens are the future of society. How can we continue to make important contributions?

Speakers:

Felicia A Huppert - Professor of Psychology and Director of Cambridge Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ageing.

Tom Kirkwood - Professor of Medicine, Head of the University of Newcastle's Department of Gerontology and giver of The End of Age 2001 Reith Lectures.

Professors Huppert and Kirkwood are both major contributors to The Foresight Report 2008 into Mental Capital and Wellbeing.

Colin Blakemore - Professor of Neuroscience at University of Oxford and University of Warwick . Chairman of the Neuroscience Research Partnership in Singapore .

Moderator:

Vivienne Parry - writer and broadcaster, with a weekly column in The Times Body & Soul section. Presenter of Radio 4 programmes Inside the Ethics Committee and Am I Normal ? She is a scientist by training.

The meeting takes place in the Wellcome Trust Lecture Hall at the Royal Society and interval refreshments will be served in the City of London Rooms .

Admission is by ticket only at £11.50 per person including refreshments.

Apply to The Third Age Trust (Dana), 19 East Street, Bromley BR1 1QE enclosing a s.a.e. Cheques payable to The Third Age Trust.   Tickets will not be available on the door.

U3A NATIONAL TRAVEL

U3A National Travel  continues to be U3A's travel service with group tours that are designed, organised and led by experienced U3A group tour organisers.
A revised list of tours with an educational or cultural interest is now posted on the U3A National Travel web pages and on http://db.u3a.org.uk/travel/tour_list.htm in particular.
Please remember that all U3A National Travel tours are for U3A members and their companions. Although we use commercial tour operators that are fully bonded, there is always a U3A leader on our tours.
